GPS Devices ? Don’t Get Lost

Mobile GPS devices are becoming more and more popular each day, for they allow great portability. Most consumer GPS devices can be easily fit into the palm and are not that heavy as well. It can also be clip to a pet’s collar or fit into a cell phone. The basic concept behind GPS unit is quite simple. It includes a radio emitter that works with a clock, and together they work with Satellite that are located in the space. And now with the booming of technology, we have GPS device installed in many laptops computers, cars and even at seat back television screen of airplanes.

While the GPS technology does not really need a lot of space, the software that adds the functionalities expected by the consumer, actually does. The software once created, gets improved by getting smaller. The fact that not all GPS features are required by the customers, allows for smaller GPS devices.

How does a GPS device work? As already said, the GPS device requires a radio emitter and a clock to work. The emitter sends the time of the clock to the satellite overhead. The satellite then calculates the amount of time it took for the radio signal to reach them and then figures the distance from that. Three or four satellites compare their location and the time involved. They then show the location within about six inches depending on the accuracy of the unit’s clock.

Portable GPS device can be of many use. Besides plotting navigation or tracking objects and living things, it can use the data as information in applications.

Many mobile devices are GPS enabled, in the present times. One of the most talked about, is the GPS navigation system of Nokia N95 and the Nokia 6110 navigator. The GPS of these devices are very user-friendly, and designed to meet the requirements of the modern users.

Nokia’s N95 Dual-sliding Powerhouse Smart Phone

While it shares much with the Nokia N80 in terms of both design and functionality, Nokia’s N95, the subject of this review, takes the capabilities of a mobile phone to a new level. On paper, at least, there appears to be little that this Finnish wonder can’t do. It has quad-band GSM/EDGE support and 2100MHz UMTS as well as a 5 megapixel auto focus camera, a built-in GPS receiver, Bluetooth stereo support, and 802.11b/g WLAN support.

Considering all the features that are packed into the Nokia N95, you’d think it would be a pretty hefty phone, but not so, my friends. The N95 measures a compact 3.8 inches long by 2.1 inches wide by 0.8 inch thick and weighs only 4.2 ounces. It feels comfortable to hold, and the soft-touch finish on the back of the device makes it easier to grip. That said, we couldn’t help but think that the phone felt, well, kind of cheap. In particular, the front cover felt plasticky and rickety (more on this below). From an aesthetic standpoint, the N95 certainly falls more into the short and stocky category rather than svelte and sexy, but we think it’s still a good-looking phone with its plum-and-silver color scheme.

The GPS is really GPS, not some assisted-GPS that Sprint and Verizon have in their phones. That means you can really navigate with it, like I did, to streets around SF I wasn’t too familiar with. (Specifically, the corner of Washington and Cherry, close to where the Zodiac killer blew away a Cabbie so many years ago.) The point of interest database is sizable and you can search for things by proximity (the nearest ATM or liquor store), and then get the phone dialing right up. Turn by turn is a subscription that’ll cost you about $10 a month, and the voice nave won’t read street names, but that, and the phone’s persistent Lag aside, it rocks.

Other features include finding the nearest location in a certain category from a Point Of Information database (e.g. finding your nearest public transport station), storing landmarks (favourite locations), and switching to night colours. Maps is a very impressive application, which we will be covering in more detail later. In use, I found the GPS took a few minutes to ‘lock on’ when inside (next to a window) from a cold start; outside it was much quicker, as expected, and soft starts were faster still (a matter of a few seconds). A subjective first impression suggests the N95 has similar capabilities to SIRF II GPS chipsets. As with any GPS, performance will vary on your location and degree of visibility of satellites.

Features of the Nokia N95 include:

* Series 60 Symbian interface (version 3.1)

* 5 megapixel camera (2592 x 1944 pixels) with Carl Zeiss optics, Tessar lens, auto focus, flash (auto redeye reduction), 20x digital zoom

As said earlier due to this revolution, newer means of communication evolved. These means gave a whole new direction to the process of communication. These newer methods replaced the traditional methods of communication. But, there was one main problem that these newer channels were suffering. These channels were very expensive to maintain and were out of the reach of common people.

As the time passed, so the technology of these channels improved. Among these all new methods, mobile phones became the most popular as they were trendy, reliable and gave the comfort to its users to communicate even while they were travelling. Due to this same reason only, mobile phones soon left the Internet and E-mail behind it in the department of popularity. But still, these devices were facing a problem that was the dearth of quality and cheap mobile handsets. The manufacturers of these devices realised this problem and soon put their whole effort in providing the customers with a quality and low priced mobile phone handsets. How To Find The Best Phones

Mobile phones are great, I mean they allow you to stay in touch with the office, go down the pub and basically keep on the move. My first mobile phone was really basic, giving you just the ability to make calls and nothing else.

Now today’s mobile phones and smartphones allow you to do virtually everything like help you find your way with a GPS receiver, listen to music with a built-in MP3 player, take pictures with included cameras and even keep fit with personal trainer software.

But mobile phones also allow you now to stay in touch with the office working remotely all from your phone, surfing the internet or catching up with your profile on facebook thanks to 3G, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity. Heck that can do most things bar make your tea, although I am sure that it won’t be long before some one comes up with that.

Here are a couple of the latest phones that I think really embrace what a phone should be at the moment, ie far more than just a device that makes calls or allows you to send the odd text.

Apple iPhone

Seen by some as the ultimate smartphone the iPhone marries a mobile phone, internet surfing device and MP3 player in one box the size of a deck of cards complete with touch screen. The user interface is amazing, and with the software developers kit coming available in June there should be an amazing array of games, applications, widgets and much more to allow to take the phone to the next level.

Okay so it’s not all perfect the phone might offer Wi-Fi but there is no 3G or HSDPA connectivity instead relying on the rather slow EDGE technology for connectiving to the web when out and about and some will find the on screen keyboard hard to use. But still as a smartphone this is hard to beat.

Nokia N95

When Nokia wanted this classified as a computer rather than a phone we can see why. It’s got a 5 megapixel camera, a GPS receiver, a MP3 player with 8GB of memory, a 3.5mm headphones jack and built in Wi-Fi as well as 3G connectivity. Selling over a million handsets, the phone has just been upgraded to the newly announced N96, not due till later in the year. That version will offer the same tech specs but in a slightly more refined package with a bigger screen and the promise of a bug free interface.

Sony Ericsson Walkman W890

You might have associated music with the Walkman in the eighties, but now it’s more likely to bring your mind to the company’s range of mobile phones in the 2000s. The latest handset from Sony Ericsson is the W890 a mobile phone aimed at the mature phone user, worrying that’s over 25’s. The super thin W890i, which will follow on from the company’s W880i handset will ditch the prickly keys, come with a 2GB MemoryStick in the box, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a host of other features including the company’s latest music software, version 3 and its SensMe application that picks tunes on a given mood or tempo.

The new phone will offer HSDPA connectivity rather than standard 3G of the W880 and come a choice of three colours: Espresso Black, Mocha Brown and Sparking Silver.
