After the incredibly successful 2010 that Samsung experienced, this year could really have gone either way for the Korean company. We could have either seen them build on the brilliance of last year’s smartphones; models such as the Wave, and their flagship the Samsung Galaxy S, or it could have gone in the other direction with the company unable to match the feats of last year and return to the quiet times of the end of the previous decade.

Thankfully, for both the company and us mobile phone users, the first scenario seems to be unfolding before us. Already we have seen several of Samsung’s plans for this year and it looks to be just as successful a twelve months this time around.

Firstly, in a world where nearly every phone that is released is run on Android, it is extremely refreshing to see a phone that offers a viable alternative to Google’s dominance. This is exactly what Samsung have produced as the follow up to the Samsung Wave – run on the company’s very own Bada software – the Wave 578.

The first Wave did incredibly well, selling over 5 million units last year alone and although the new phone, like it’s little brother, will not set the world alight, it is a decent mid range smartphone that people will rely on for its reliability and simplicity as much as anything else.

The most exciting news involves, inevitably, Samsung’s latest Android offering, the Samsung Galaxy S II, an upgrade of last year’s sensation, the Galaxy S. The phone’s hardware has been more than suitably upgraded as we see the move to a dual core processor. It is still at 1GHz but the added power offered by the dual core should allow you to get the best out of any software you wish to use on the phone.

The Galaxy S II also has a great 8 megapixel camera so there is a definite improvement in that area, we will just have to wait and see if the rest of the phone is equally as exciting.
