Of all of the mobile phone manufacturers and designers in the world over the last few years, Samsung has arguably made the most progress. It has stepped up to the plate with design after design that has been both beautiful to look at and technologically advanced as well. One of the latest offerings, the Samsung G600, has undoubtedly fit the bill if the company is to be believed. It boasts of excellent features and a look that would melt many a mobile fanatic, but what can it really do?

The Samsung G600 is extremely innovative and actually combines the two areas of technological advancement that Samsung is well known for – the digital camera and the mobile phone. However, it is the appearance of the Samsung G600 that will first catch your eye rather than the feature list.

The Samsung G600 is undoubtedly sexy. It is sleek, exudes style and has a classic air that ensures that it will never go out of fashion. It is a slider and the motion is extremely smooth, unlike some of Samsung’s previous offerings that have felt like the top is about to slide off at any moment! The keypad is well spaced and the screen sits beautifully framed within the casing, which happens to be grey. Although this is a little unusual, it really does enhance he appearance of the handset so is definitely a strength of the design.

However, no matter how good the appearance of the phone is, the overall appeal most definitely lies within the feature list, which is simply amazing! The connectivity is excellent, with stereo bluetooth and a USB port, and it has all of the features that now come as standard such as the web browser, organiser and excellent media player. However, the camera will ultimately blow you away. The Samsung G600’s camera was one of the first two 5MP cameras and certainly sets that tone well for those that have and are to follow.

The camera has no faults at all. The high quality of images is simply outstanding but Samsung were not about to leave it there. The G600 also has an editing package on board so you can edit your photos until you are completely happy. The package and the camera itself are simple enough to use so you do not need a degree in technology to get it to work. There is also video functionality for you to tap into.

However, not to be outdone by other brands, the Samsung G600 also has an excellent music player on board. Although its functionality is secondary to the camera, it is extremely easy to access and use and features good sound quality. It supports all of the major file types and also has an FM radio. As such, this is a great all round phone.

Unlike other phones, there are very few issues with the Samsung G600. In fact, there are none at all that absolutely stand out. Some individuals may not like the keypad or the fact that the camera and music player are not given equal weight. However, you do have to look incredibly hard for a fault so instead of doing so you should just sit back and enjoy the functionality and style.

The entertainment quotient of the phone consists of 3D games, Java compatibility, Radio, FM Radio with RDS, capturing video clips and video streaming capabilities.  The music features consist of Bluetooth stereo with A2DP, Music tones, media player, Music tunes in MP3 ad AAC, PlayNow and TrackID programs for easy management of music content. 

These days with obesity and health problems dogging us all we are keeping our eyes out for potential ways to help keep us well. Some mobile phones are catering for this mindset with applications and new features that can help us achieve our goals. Some plans recently detailed show ways in which our mobile phones could potentially save lives too.

A recent patent filing arrived at the FCC in America proposing mobile phones that have portable defibrillators built in them. Two buttons on the phone would act as the paddles we see doctors on TV shows like ER and Casualty sticking to the chests of people under cardiac arrest. So what is the reasoning behind this patent filing? Well the patent describes how 400,000 Americans die every year from Sudden Cardiac Death, it then follows with the rather straight forward thought that if more of us were carrying portable defibrillators on our person then the mortality rate would be much reduced.

Whilst this may be another patent filing never to come to fruition there are plenty of ways a mobile phone can be used to exercise and help prevent heart problems that would need a defibrillator in the first place. Many people who go running or jogging like to do so to music and mobile phones are perfect for this with many of them moonlighting as MP3 players with the added safety of if you twist your ankle or injure yourself miles from home you can call for help!

A more recent addition to some mobile phones is Global Positioning Systems (GPS) which allow you to find your way home if you’ve been a bit overzealous going for a bike ride and got yourself lost. Some mobile phone positioning software caters specifically if you were on foot and not in a car, obviously aimed squarely at joggers and cyclists who need to track where they’re going.

Ever since the Apple iPhone and SonyEricsson K850i motion sensing technology has become the next big thing with mobile phones, not only detecting whether the phone is being held at a certain angle but being able to detect movements such as steps taken. Nokia have released a program for their phones called a Sport’s tracker, working in tandem with the GPS receiver it allows you to plan exercise routes, count steps like a pedometer would and report back how many of those extra calories you’ve burnt off.

They aren’t the only ones too, Japanese mobile supremo NTT DoCoMo has worked with Mitsubishi on what they are calling the “wellness mobile phone” which can measure body fat ratio, pulse and bizarrely breath odour! Whilst it was only shown off at a trade fair last year the Japanese company expects to one day release the device commercially.

So there you have it, mobile phones have dominated so many other fields of electronics (digital cameras, email, GPS) they now seem poised to keep tabs on our health be it subtle methods like planning routes to restarting hearts, this is clearly a subject to keep a close eye on.

This past week Google’s developer’s conference was one of the first demos of the Android mobile phone operating system.  Announced last year by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of mobile phone manufacturers and software houses who want to have one unilateral platform for all mobile phones to run on Android looks to be one of the most interesting revolutions in the Mobile phones market.

Being developed by Google the phones are highly likely to blend well with other Google-ware like the popular Maps service and Google Mail service.  The stand out feature is that the operating system is being designed to run on a wide range of mobile phones regardless of their feature set.  In a similar way to how PC operating systems are made to work on a wide range of computers with varying specifications Android will take advantage of specific phone features such as built in GPS and touch screen interfaces.

This past week had the operating system running on a touch screen unnamed handset and it was sporting a number of new features since it was last shown off earlier in the year.  One exciting feature was how the handset was unlocked; the user had to draw a specific shape on the touch screen to unlock the keypad.  Another feature took advantage of the GPS function by having an on screen compass which had been tried on other handsets such as the GPS enabled S60 phones offered by Nokia but attendees said the example shown by Google seemed to work much more fluidly than other attempts.

The decision to show off the software at their developers conference was obviously to entice the collective minds into coming up with some ideas for possible applications for their operating system, with it being open-source software, a factor popular with the programming masses, it looks promising that any mobile phones sporting Android’s operating system would have a lot to offer the stale mobile phones market.

Obviously a lot of comparisons were made between the software and Apple’s stand out mobile phone the iPhone, the interface seemed to bear some of the Apple hallmarks such as saving Youtube links as icons on the main screen and a touch based interface.

The Android operating system is currently nearing completion with handset manufacturers Motorola, HTC and Samsung all volunteering to use Android on their forth-coming mobile phones in the next year.

LG is well known for the high end yet user-friendly phones that it has introduced into the marketplace in recent years. The mobile phone specialist has proven very popular with mobile phone users of all ages and demands. However, not one to rest on its laurels, LG has certainly gone forth and developed the latest technology to take pride of place within its functional yet feature filled handsets. The latest offering of the LG KC910 Renoir is no exception. It has already been compared to the iPhone and touted as a worthy contender to the ultimate touch screen phone, but can it really live up to the hype?

The answer is a resounding yes! The LG KC910 Renoir has overwhelming strengths that pay testament to the dedication LG have displayed in developing this handset. Starting with the appearance of the phone, it is undeniably sexy and sophisticated. In fact, this is one of the phones that are most pleasing to the eye I have ever seen. It is slim and light, fitting into the hand nicely, as well as simply beautiful. The 3 inch screen dominates the handset but is simply breathtaking given the 240×400 pixel display and millions of colours that can be seen on there.

When you use the touch screen functionality to delve into the menus though you truly will find it difficult to put into words what you find. The features list is extensive and comprehensive. Every single element is of a high quality given that LG seems to have listened to the public and improved on all of the features previously fund in LG handsets and eliminating previous glitches and niggles. As such, the LG KC910 Renoir is perhaps the best handset they have ever developed.

The LG KC910 Renoir’s 8MP camera is a great place to start when dealing with features. The images taken are phenomenal. You can use the touch screen controls to capture the images so no messing around with buttons. With a Xenon flash, blink detection, smile mode and beauty shot, you are guaranteed to get quality images. There is also DivX support incorporated into its functionality for ease of use of the video function as well. The video is also of a high quality and the editing software enables you to do as you wish with it right there in the handset.

Believe it or not, the music player does not suffer as a result of the LG KC910 Renoir’s camera capabilities. With Dolby quality sound available and most file types supported, you can listen to your tunes as and when you like really easily.

There is only one niggle with the LG KC910 Renoir handset and it is so small that it is barely worth a mention. Like many touch screen phones, the handset attracts greasy fingerprints, but if you wash your hands and wipe the phone every now and again this is of no consequence.

If the iPhone was waiting for a contender to come along then this is it. The LG KC910 Renoir is absolutely fantastic and anyone that has ever used one will definitely rave about it. LG should be commended for their hard work but they have certainly got a hard act to follow!

Choosing a GPS navigation device can be a daunting process especially if you have never used a GPS device. GPS devices can get you from point A to point B with almost no thinking, just enter a starting address and a destination then let your GPS unit talk and visually guide you. It’s that simple. Before you just run out and pick up any GPS Navigation System there are a few features or aspects you need think about.

1. Accurate Navigation is the most important part of your GPS device. All GPS devices will tell you they are extremely accurate, this isn’t always true. Online User groups are great way to find out how accurate a GPS device is because most groups give unbiased advice.

2. Your GPS unit should be easy to use. Go to your local electronics store and test several devices. Make sure the interface is easy for you to operate. Lower priced GPS units have a bare bones interface that can sometimes be clunky and slow.

3. Long Battery Life. Trust me here, the longer the battery life the better. Getting a GPS unit with long battery life can really increase the price tag but it’s worth it, especially if you are not near your car charger. Most GPS Units have an additional charging port on the side to plug in another device such as a cell phone. Bigger batteries also mean less clutter in the car because you won’t need to pull out that charger. My last point on getting a better battery is that you can load your routes with having to be plugged into an external power source.

4. Named Streets. You’re going to pay more for this, but it’s worth it if you are in an unfamiliar city. So, instead of your gps device saying “turn right” it may say “turn right on Big St”.

5. Real-time traffic stats. Most GPS devices will ask you how you want to get to a location (either shortest or quickest route) but very few consider if there is traffic on the chosen route. Real-time traffic stats are usually reserved for the most expensive GPS devices. If you’re rich, then this feature is for you.

6. Consider the GPS size and weight. When you go to your electronics store make sure you can pick up the GPS unit to feel it’s weight. Also, screen size is very important if you have trouble seeing because your GPS device may be mounted a foot or two from your eyes.

7. Screen and audio clarity. Make sure you can see everything clearly on your GPS device especially in direct light and in the dark. Most GPS devices feature night illumination controls which really help for all you night drivers. The audio should be crisp, clear and very easy to understand. If you like to listen to the radio while using GPS navigation make sure your GPS unit has a load speaker (or good audio out).

A rich heritage – the LG Viewty

In 2007, a handset came out that shocked everyone involved with mobile phones. We all kind of knew it would do well, but we didn’t expect it to do as well as it did. That phone was the LG Viewty, and it offered the most amazing camera, and the most wow-factor, of any mobile phones on the market at that time. Everyone predicted people would warm to it, because this beauty from LG was just so… well, different to other mobile phones on the market. A full touchscreen interface, a 5 megapixel camera (a rarity in them days), and masses upon masses of cool stuff. But what really made the public pick it up and run with it was its outright, sheer, unadulterated wow factor. It just OOZED cool, and people went for it in a big way. The thing that surprised (and is still surprising us), is that, believe it or not, if you look at the current list of top-ten mobile phones, the year-old Viewty is still in it!

But it won’t last forever, and it’s time for the LG Viewty to hand on the baton. It needs a special mobile phone to pass it on to, and that’s what it gets in the LG KC910 Renoir.

You can clearly see the ancestry of the Viewty, when you look at the LG KC910 Renoir. The two mobile phones share similar sleek looks, and the Flash-based, touchscreen interface of the LG KC910 Renoir is a direct evolution of the Viewty’s. Both mobile phones have loads of multimedia options, both have a system optimised for touch control, but the newer LG KC910 Renoir takes on a new camera. And, oh dear lord, what a camera it is, weighing in at an unbelievable 8 megapixels! So, it’s going to sharper and crisper than anything you’ve ever see before, but the fun doesn’t end there. As it is easily one of the highest spec mobile phones in the world, the LG KC910 Renoir also has more features than, for example, NASA and more power than a small South American country. Night modes, xenon flash, manual focus, and the piece de resistance, the slow-mo video from the Viewty, and the high-speed, time-lapse video from the LG Secret. The LG KC910 Renoir also has the features that are becoming commonplace among modern mobile phones: WiFi, HSDPA, GPS and so on.

Can the LG KC910 Renoir really live up to the legacy of the Viewty?

It’s a lot to ask of it, really, isn’t it… The Viewty is still a big seller even now, a year after its launch, and it’s easily the most successful mobile phone LG have ever made. So, the LG KC910 Renoir really does have a lot to live up to. The crucial question is, can it do it? Well, it’s certainly got the edge over all the other mobile phones that are due out before Christmas. ok, sure, there are some other 8 megapixel mobile phones due out, but none of them are as slim as the LG KC910 Renoir, and none of the others have a touchscreen. Or slow-motion video. Or those sleek looks. And knowing LG, they’ll probably make sure the price of the LG KC910 Renoir isn’t too over the top, as they did with the Viewty, to make it even more appealing. It remains to be seen whether it can grab the same success, and attract the same love, as that groundbreaker, but one thing’s for sure: the LG KC910 Renoir has got the potential to kick its rivals in the world of mobile phones right out of the park!

How many times have you had that annoying voice tell you that you’ve just missed your left turn, but then it very kindly recorrects and adjusts for your missed turn and tells you how to get to that Krispy Kreme in Richmond that you just need to have? Or maybe that was just me, but most people who have GPS/portable navigation systems in their cars have managed to settle down to having a small, inexpensive TomTom or other form of nav system that sits on their dashboard and is kind of small and petite.

While these things are incredibly valuable for when you’re lost somewhere, the fact is that the most recent iPhone and Smartphone is about to make GPS systems in cars obsolete. Yup, you read that right. Obsolete. In fact, the current iPhone has a function that allows you to find out just about your exact location, due to a nicely-tuned program with Google maps in that little beauty. The current iPhone will triangulate your position with a ton of different Wi-Fi hotspots in the area and attempt to pinpoint your location from there. Thing are about to get even more complicated in the business market, though, as the brand new Apple iPhone, the one that Steve Jobs is going to reveal in just a few days, is going to have an entire GPS system right inside that little machine that would all but destroy the market for GPS systems.

Not that the iPhone didn’t have enough bells and whistles to really get your techno-motor going, but with this nice little GPS system, you’ll be able to find out where you need to go no matter what way you’re traveling. This way, if you’re a pedestrian who’s trying to figure out where to go, rest assured that your iPhone can tell you. The new smartphone is also amazing in it’s navigation system.

And if that isn’t good enough for you, apparently, these plans have officially scared the life out of the manufacturers of the TomToms, S-Dals and many other GPS automotive navigation systems. The fact that the iPhone is going to be with their customer all the time will essentially eliminate the need for a dash-board navigational system, since they can just pull it up on their phone and keep driving, which, many people still seem to do.

The only problem with this entire thing will be having people learn how to adjust to the smaller screen of the iPhone without creating an unneeded distraction while driving. The smartphone offers a better screen that can make it easier to use.

Nokia N98 has large 7.2 megapixels camera. This device is capable of taking motion pictures with the resolution of 720 x 576 pixels. The rate of video recording is 60 frames per second. The other features of the device are Carl Zeiss optics, auto focus, Xenon flash, 20X digital zoom and 5X optical zoom. The secondary camera of the widget has size of 0.3 inches.

Screen:

Digital Imaging Systems (DIS) today announced the launch and availability of the first ever 9 MP (Megapixel) camera module for mobile phones. Its new DIS6931 camera modules provide rich features such as auto-focus, high quality lenses, mechanical shutter and ND-filter with integrated actuators and an easy to access platform software, enabling high-end digital still camera (DSC) quality in mobile phones. DIS is exhibiting at this week’s Photokina fair in Cologne, Germany, hall 03.1, stand number D007.

With its unique platform concept the new DIS6931 camera module enables existing customers to upgrade their DIS camera modules to higher pixel resolutions without hardware change in the host and with the shortest possible software integration time.
“We wanted to maintain our leadership in digital still camera (DSC) quality modules for mobile phones to create new market opportunities for handset manufacturers. With our ultra fast AF (auto-focus), the fastest mobile click-to-capture time and excellent picture quality, we are in a strong position to drive the convergence of mid-range DSC’s into mobile devices,” said Roland Pudelko, CEO of Digital Imaging Systems.
DIS6931 camera module

The DIS6931 is an all in one DSC quality camera module with a simple command interface. It incorporates a high resolution CMOS sensor, advanced optical lens system with mechanical shutter and ND-filter, a proprietary interface / control DSP, miniaturized and proprietary low power actuators and a common firmware platform.
The common control interface allows seamless upgrades between different DIS camera modules such as higher resolution or optical zoom. The ultra-fast autofocus (<300ms) and the fast click-to-capture time (<200ms) compete with mid range DSC’s, enabling image capture of fast moving objects such as sports events.

The module delivers image data with a max resolution of 3488 x 2616 pixels through either a parallel interface or optional MIPI interface. It also supports a variety of different view finder and HDTV sizes with frame rates up to 30fps (e.g.720p) DIS6931 pre-production samples are available now; volume production is planned for end of Q4 2008.

Nokia have announced a new business mobile phone which is a straight forward upgrade to the E65 upgrade. Surprisingly it is has been named the E66!
